# Assign a Vehicle / Trailer to a Route

You can assign a vehicle to a route easily and quickly by choosing from the list of available and appropriate vehicles, and you can add capacity if needed by selecting the most efficient trailer. Bringg automatically compares a route's requirements with the capacity and capabilities (skills) of each available vehicle and trailer.

For example, after creating a route, you can choose the best option from your Own Fleet to make sure that you are not using a small trailer when the load requires a large one, or a large van when a small car would be sufficient for the load. This also applies to checking if a route requires a refrigerated truck, or other special capabilities (skills). Alternatively, you might need to reassign a new vehicle so that you can perform maintenance on the one that was already assigned.

#### Before You Begin

- Confirm your implementation of Bringg is configured to maintain vehicles and trailers.
- Update vehicles and trailers with capacities and skills to match orders.
- Create a route for your orders. This can be done by running route optimization, by creating an on demand route, or by manually creating a route. [Learn more](/v1/docs/dispatch-orders-with-bringg).

#### Procedure

**Step 1**: Open Bringg and navigate to **History, Planning**, or **Dispatch > List**.

**Step 2:** To view the details of each route, select **Group By > Route**. If you are working with multiple teams, you can choose **Team & Route** instead.

**Step 3**: (Optional) To isolate specific routes, you can filter the list.

For example, if you want to view only the routes that require a rushed delivery so that you can assign a motorbike to the route, select **More Fields > Service Plans**, and then choose the appropriate service level agreement from the list.

To locate a specific route that you have already assigned to adriver (optional), you can search the driver's name.

**Step 4**: To assign a vehicle to a route, select **Choose vehicle** next to the vehicle![](https://cdn.document360.io/a18074ef-073a-4ab1-bcab-12625715280e/Images/Documentation/image-1678700437942.png)icon on the route header.

You can also assign a new vehicle to a route if it already has a vehicle, by selecting the vehicle name.

**Step 5**: The capacity bubble in the top right compares the volume of all orders in your route with the size of each vehicle.

When you select a vehicle in the list, the capacity bubble adjusts to show whether your choice is an efficient use of the vehicle's resources.

Some vehicles, like day cabs, have no innate capacity, and would display **NA**.

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| **NA** White | This vehicle cannot carry any goods by itself. You can add capacity by combining the selected vehicle with a trailer. For example, a day cab or power unit that has no storage space. |

**Step 6**: If you need to add more capacity, select a trailer by following the same steps, using the available trailers.

For example, if you select a day cab with no innate capacity, the meter might read **15,000/NA**. Then, when you choose a trailer which can hold 17,000, the capacity meter immediately updates to show **15,000/17,000** and would be almost filled with yellow.

Trailers which are available for assignment display with a green dot. Bringg automatically confirms if a specific trailer can work with the selected vehicle. It won't let you assign an incompatible trailer.

**Step 7**: To add the vehicle to your route, select **Assign**.

If needed, you can also: unassign a trailer, or both the vehicle and its trailer by

- Unassign a trailer selecting **Unassign Trailer** at the bottom of the window. For example, if you leave a trailer filled with goods at the customer's site, and collect an empty trailer for the return journey, you can track this in Bringg by unassigning the trailer on the outbound trip, and assigning a different trailer on the return drive.
- Unassign both a vehicle and its trailer by selecting **Unassign Vehicle**.

A vehicle in your Own Fleet is paired with a driver to reach a destination on a route. Each vehicle has a type, capacity (maximum weight or dimensions), and you assign specific skills to each one to allow Bringg to choose the correct vehicle for each order. You can define the availability of vehicles in delivery blocks.

A route is a sequence of destinations from one or more orders. Bringg can automatically create routes by calculating the fastest and most efficient route which fulfills the orders. Bringg can also help you assign the most appropriate vehicle and the driver with the correct skills to complete the order.

There are two types of routes:

1. A planned route is a route containing planned orders that you create in advance, either manually or using route optimization. For example, you can run route optimization every day at 10pm so that drivers can start their routes when they start their shifts the next morning.
2. An on demand route is a route which contains on demand orders that you create on the fly by using Autodispatch (AD), which continuously and automatically assigns orders to a team's drivers, vehicles, and routes. Common examples are deliveries for restaurants, grocery and pharmacy stores, or roadside assistance.

After you dispatch the orders in a route, drivers receive their route in their Driver App as a series of destinations, each with their associated order which they pick up or hand off to the consumer.

Run Bringg's route optimization (RO) to reduce costs by organizing your orders into the fastest, most efficient planned routes, where each order arrives at its destination within its designated time window. If you have an Own Fleet, RO can also assign each route to a vehicle or driver who is available at that time and has the correct skills to fulfill the orders. You can configure RO with preferences like the maximum length of a route, the time on site (TOS), the time to load the vehicle, predicted and real time traffic patterns, and so on.

For example, you can ask to set route optimization (RO) to limit the number of destinations on a route, or to use the minimum number of vehicles in a route.

Each time you run route optimization on the same group of orders you may well receive a different result, as there are multiple ways to organize the same group of orders into efficient routes. Instead of reshuffling all orders each time, build on your existing plans by making focused changes where they are required using the route planner.

You can run RO manually or automatically at set days and times, for select teams or across the entire organization.

On demand orders typically use AutoDispatch (AD) instead.

A route is a sequence of destinations that serves as work instructions for drivers, usually starting and ending at your fulfillment center. Each destination in a route is a delivery or service point for one or more orders. A route can be short, such as for perishable food deliveries that you dispatch a few orders at a time, or they can take up a driver's entire shift.
